Before understanding the relationship between the color temperature of LED plant lights and plant growth, let's first look at two concepts.
Color temperature is a physical quantity used to define the color of a light source in lighting optics. It means heating a "black body" to a certain temperature. When the color of the light emitted by the black body is the same as that emitted by a light source, the heating temperature of the black body is the color temperature of the light source, also known as the color temperature. Zero Kelvin is called absolute zero, at which the kinetic energy of gas molecules is zero.
The black body is an ideal object defined by physicists for studying thermal radiation. The black body can absorb incoming electromagnetic radiation without any reflection or transmission. It can radiate electromagnetic waves, the wavelength of which depends on the temperature of the black body. When the temperature rises to a certain degree, it can emit visible light waves visible to the naked eye, from black to dark red, and then in turn orange, yellow, white, and other colors. Thus, the color temperature in the visible light range rises from warm to cool.
The light color of LED grow lights for herbs is determined by the LED plant light bead. As can be inferred from the two concepts above, if the color emitted by the LED plant light bead is red, and the color of the black body at a temperature of nK is the same as the color of the plant light bead, then the color temperature of the light emitted by the LED plant light bead is called nK.
In a single LED light bead, various colors can be produced using its light-emitting principle, and its power, voltage, and current can be kept constant. In other words, under these unchanged conditions, the LED light bead can emit light with different color temperatures. LED grow lights for herbs mainly affect plant growth through light quality and light intensity. That is to say, the light emitted by the LED plant growth lamp bead is close to monochromatic light, while the virtual black body uses the required temperature for compound light color transformation to obtain the color temperature. Therefore, it is meaningless to measure the quality of LED plant lights based on color temperature.
However, this does not mean that the growth of plants has no relationship with the color temperature of plant grow lights. We can understand it as follows: plant growth requires light of a certain color temperature, but light of a certain color temperature is not necessarily what plants need for growth. When supplementing indoor lighting with white light, a color temperature of around 5500-6000K is suitable, similar to the color temperature of sunlight. This is also determined by the growth environment of plants on earth. However, the light that is truly effective for photosynthesis in plants is mainly the red and blue light in the visible spectrum.
